Cross Certification with Doula Canada

Why choose Cross-Certification with Doula Training Canada?

At Doula Training Canada we believe that the world needs more doulas. We also know that the doula profession has a rich history where early doulas were our friends, neighbours, and community. While the word doula is new, the idea behind it is as ancient as time. We recognize that no one doula program is ‘perfect’ and that people come to the work from various directions. The cross-certification program is ideal for those who:

  • Have taken another training but don’t resonate with the teachings or certification process
  • Are certified through another organization but no longer wish to continue with that organization and don’t want to let go of the hard work of having achieved certification
  • Are medical practitioners with related experience or from other countries who don’t want to do a full program but wish to work as a doula

Our cross-certification program is tailored to meet the needs of these 3 various groups and each pathway has associated steps.

All Pathways require a valid CPR/First Aid (for professionals), IPAC training (infection protection and control training), and for Postpartum Doulas a food handling course is required.

Pathways

Pathway 1: Trained Doula

Pathway 1 is for people who have taken some doula training before but not completed any type of certification. This could include people who have community experience as well but have taken no formal training.

In this pathway  you will be asked to review our doula training content. It will be up to you which sections you feel you need to study and review.  You will be REQUIRED to review the sections on the Doula role and scope of practice and our anti-oppression module.  You will be asked to do a practicum involving supporting 3 clients and obtaining evaluations and doing a write-up about your experience. Once that is completed you will sit for the exam to complete certification.

Pathway 2: Certified Doula

Pathway 2 is for people who have taken a doula training course before AND completed certification. This pathway applies to you if your certification included a client practicum (you were required to support clients).

In this pathway  you will be given access to our doula training content. It will be up to you to decide if you feel the need to study and review.  You will be REQUIRED to review the sections on the Doula role and scope of practice and our anti-oppression module. Once that is completed you will sit for the exam to complete certification.

Pathway 3: Medical Provider

Pathway 3 is for people who are trained and certified care providers in a related medical field. This could include nurses, midwives, PSWs, including people certified in other countries but whose credentials may not be valid in North America.

In this pathway  you will be asked to review our doula training content. It will be up to you to decide if you feel the need to study and review, but you will be REQUIRED to review the sections on the Doula role and scope of practice and our anti-oppression module. You will be asked to do a practicum involving supporting 2 clients and obtaining evaluations and doing a write-up about your experience. Once that is completed you will sit for the exam to complete certification.
