Envisioning Reconciliation: A Doulas for Reconcili-ACTION Virtual Vision Board Session

February 24 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm EST

Free – $30.00

Objectives:

Identify personal and group allyship goals for 2024 in the form of virtual vision boards using Canva software.

Description/workshop overview:

Are you a doula passionate about allyship, social justice, and advocacy? Have you been reading about reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples and don’t know where to begin? Do you want to use your role as a doula as a catalyst for systemic change?

Join Kayt Ward, EDI Co-lead and Indigenous Inclusion and Engagement Lead for a virtual vision board exercise and sharing circle to kick off the Doulas for Reconcili-ACTION program for 2024!

In this 90 minute workshop, attendees will create a virtual vision board to visualize their goals as doulas engaging in reconciliation and allyship with Indigenous Peoples. The tool being used for this exercise will be Canva. A free version is available at www.canva.com. The workshop will end with a sharing circle where participants can share their pieces and their personal goals related to reconciliation and allyship.

Instructor information:

Kayt is a birth doula, yoga instructor, and the EDI Co-lead for Indigenous Peoples at Doula Canada. She is of mixed European and Anishnaabe Ancestry, with a background in Social Work and Indigenous Studies.

About the program:

As part of Doula Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Action Plan, the Doulas for Reconcili-ACTION program is designed to create a space of engagement and learning for ally doulas wanting to learn more about how to engage in Indigenous spaces. Whether brand new to the allyship scene, or a seasoned doula advocate, all are welcome.

The program is divided into two parts: cultural education workshops and action hours. The workshops provide education on allyship and reconciliation, as well as Indigenous issues in the birth field. The action hours are one hour mini experiential seminars that will create space for participants to practice skills and receive peer feedback. Although attendance to workshops is not necessary for action hour participation, it is highly recommended. Individual certificates of participation are available for DFR educational workshops.

Please note that this program is designed primarily for non-Indigenous participants wanting to learn more about Indigenous issues, allyship, and cultural humility. Although the container will be facilitated as a safe(r) space, participants will come with various levels of knowledge and be invited to engage in vulnerable discussion that may be uncomfortable for Indigenous participants. Indigenous participants are welcome to attend, however some conversations may be triggering and emotionally laborious. If you are an Indigenous student interested in participating, feel free to reach out to kayt@doulatraining.ca for a private debrief after the session.
